De Maria, Nicola

Nicola De Maria, born in Foglianise on December 6, 1954, is an Italian painter, one of the five artists of the Italian Transavanguardia. He enrolled in the Faculty of Medicine continuing his specialization studies in Neurology, a profession he will never practice, preferring to devote himself to art. Unlike the other exponents of the group theorized by Achille Bonito Oliva, his work mainly focused on abstractionism and a pictorial approach in which the limits of the canvas were overcome to enter into a relationship with the surrounding space, often leading him to paint directly on the walls. His work, although abstract, is full of poetic and spiritual figurative symbols, transforming poetry and lyric into painting. He has lived in Turin since he was a boy, where he still lives today.
