Richard J.F. Smeets was born in Gennep in 1955.
He trained at the Academy of Fine Arts Maastricht from 1973 to 1978.
Smeets creates lyrical semi-abstract paintings, which often express a mood or atmosphere. He says he creates his artworks in three stages: first, experience becomes a memory, then the memory becomes a dream, and finally the dream is materialized in paint and color. Smeets' work can be divided into three periods. In the work from his first period, 'the woman' is central. The work from the second period is inspired by Smeets' travels to Malaysia and Indonesia, his mother's native country. In the third period, the Dutch landscape is the subject. Smeets is also fascinated by roses, which has led to the publication 'About roses'.
Smeets' work has been exhibited in the Netherlands, the United States, Malaysia, Denmark, Germany, Indonesia and Turkey, among other countries.
