Riel, Jan van Amsterdam, (1907 - 1988) Etchings printed by himself. Johannes Petrus Cornelis (Jan) van Riel, visual artist, painter, watercolourist, draughtsman and graphic artist. Jan van Riel lived in Zaandam at the time, at the beginning of his career. He first worked as a construction draughtsman and studied at the forerunner of the Academy for Visual Education in Tilburg in 1931. He then left for the National Higher Institute of Fine Arts in Antwerp, where he was taught by Isidore Opsomer and Jozef Peeters. In Paris, he studied at the Académie Colarossi. Van Riel returned to Tilburg and was apprenticed to Henri Sicking and Jan van Delft. Considered a clever craftsman, Jan van Riel became known after World War II for his oil paintings, watercolours, linocuts and etchings, mainly expressionist harbour and cityscapes, landscapes and biblical scenes with the application of deformations without it being possible to speak of abstraction. Comes with Passe-Partout, this has some slight foxing.
