Jacques van ALPHEN (Amsterdam 1946)
An interest in language and image is defining in the work and life of Jacques van Alphen. For example, the visual artist cum publicist was editor-in-chief of the magazine Gazet, worked for Kunstbeeld and received the Boom Classical Quotes Prize for philosophy. His interest in language and image culminated in the 1990s in a series of paintings in which abstract signs and forms were related to general concepts derived from modern Western cultural history. In recent years, Van Alphen has been working primarily figuratively.
