Eugen Funk (1911 - 2004 ). He was a German artist, professor at the Stuttgart State Academy of Fine Arts , graphic designer and typographer. Eugen Funk completed his studies at the State University of Württemberg. School of Applied Arts in Stuttgart from 1930 to 1934 under the direction of Friedrich Hermann Ernst Schneidler . He was a soldier in World War II. In 1935, he became self-employed as a book and advertising graphic artist . From 1937 to 1945, Funk was studio manager at the Union-Druckerei Stuttgart, where he designed the cultural magazine Punkt (co-founder Hans Weitpert ) as the first illustrated magazine after the war. In 1949, at the same time as Walter Brudi , he was appointed to succeed Friedrich Hermann Ernst Schneidler as artistic teacher and head of the advertising graphics and writing class at the Stuttgart State Academy of Fine Arts . He was appointed professor in 1950 and retired in 1976. During his teaching career, Eugen Funk regularly went on trips and excursions with his students to the Netherlands, Spain, Italy and Yugoslavia; Favourite places of inspiration were the Italian Dolomites and the Italian Riviera , especially Marina di Massa . He taught mainly graphic and photographic techniques and advertising content. However, only a very small circle knew that Eugen Funk also devoted himself to painting and drawing. He died in January 2004, leaving behind a large number of drawings, paintings and calligraphies. His creative and experimental work in photography ( isohelia , solarisation and technical applications), which had a strong influence on his students and commercial graphics, has survived in only a few examples. Funk wanted little to do with the usual art world. He rarely gave permission for exhibitions. He did not sell pictures; he only gave some away. After his death, his estate was extensively digitised photographically. Since early 2011, some of his works have been documented in excerpts in a printed catalogue, arranged by subject. Eugen Funk is co-representative of the so-called Stuttgart School
