From 1951 to 1968 he worked as a skilled glass painter for the Wüthrich company in Bern. From 1955 to 1971 he formed the "Berner Arbeitsgemeinschaft" with Peter Meier, Konrad Vetter and Robert Wälti. From 1981 to 1995 he was a professor at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. He was married to Rosemarie Eggenschwiler-Wiggli (1932-2019), who was also an artist and the younger sister of Oscar Wiggli.
