Ad Arma Painter, graphic artist, sculptor, glass artist. Ad Arma was born in 1954 as Ad Robert Meerman in Rotterdam. Education: Arma was educated from 1974 to 1979 at Artibus, Utrecht School of the Arts. He lives and works in Alphen aan de Maas in Gelderland. Ad Arma is Latin for 'to arms' or 'to battle'. In his early days he also drew with the name ARM. Arma has formed the artist duo AP Compaan together with Peer van Eeden since 1986. Arma makes paintings, graphics, sculptures, glass objects and performances. Asia plays a major role in his work. He therefore worked for seventeen years, both in the Netherlands and Japan, together with the Japanese artist Jiro Inagaki. His travels to India, Nepal and Spitsbergen also influence the work of Ad Arma. Exhibitions and prizes: In 2007 Arma received the Artist of the Year award from the Kunstweek Foundation.
