Frédéric Hendrik (Frits) Mondriaan 1853-1932
The landscape painter Frits Mondrian is best known as ‘Uncle Frits ’the first teacher of Piet Mondrian. He took lessons from Willem Maris and, weather permitting, went out into nature to work. In the summer, he enjoyed spending time with his family in Winterswijk, where he taught his young nephew Piet the basics of painting during study trips. His oeuvre includes impressionist forest landscapes, water features and still lifes in the style of the Hague School.
