Mary Koekenbier 1942
Mary's work reflects more than 40 years of inspired artistry. Her Dutch and French landscapes, cows, flowers and portraits are dominated by a swirling colour scheme that gives her work a special allure.
Because of her training by Bergen School grandmasters Arnout Colnot and Jaap Sax, Mary is still characterised as a daughter of the Bergen School. Her earlier work was therefore characterised by the dark colour tones typical of this movement. Mary evolved her own style and started using more and more colour. In recent decades, her work also showed an affinity with the Groningen Ploeg. At the same time, and that makes her work so special, there are similarities with great Fauvist artists such as Matisse, Derain and De Vlaminck, for whom it was also primarily about colour.
