Spijkerman, Annemarie

Annemarie Spijkerman was born in IJmuiden, a harbour town on the North Sea coast, and studied at De Vrije Academie in The Hague, where she also lives. Because she has always lived in art places, water and air have been carrying elements in her life. She calls herself a storyteller, but in the form of colour, shape and gesture. Spijkerman also works without a concept; she begins her work by placing a single line on the white canvas, after which she continues to build on this. She slowly expands it with a lot of colour and form until it starts to look like (in her own words) "a colourful chaos".
